§ Mr. BevinsThe statistical investigation into the relationship between smoking and cancer of the lung was carried out by Members of the Statistical Research Unit of the Medical Research Council during the years 1948–52 at a total cost of approximately £7,000.The investigation was not in any way hampered by lack of funds. Subsequently, a panel under the Government Actuary considered the results of the investigation: the cost of this was very small.
