HC Deb 18 February 1954 vol 523 c242W
100. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works as representing the Lord President of the Council, the estimated cost of the recent inquiry into the relation between smoking and cancer; and to what extent its researches were hampered by lack of funds.

Mr. Bevins

The statistical investigation into the relationship between smoking and cancer of the lung was carried out by Members of the Statistical Research Unit of the Medical Research Council during the years 1948–52 at a total cost of approximately £7,000.The investigation was not in any way hampered by lack of funds. Subsequently, a panel under the Government Actuary considered the results of the investigation: the cost of this was very small.
