HC Deb 18 February 1954 vol 523 cc239-40W
94. Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Education why she is reducing the number of primary schools under construction at a time when the number of over crowded classes in the primary schools is increasing.

Miss Horsbrugh

The primary school population is now only some 80,000 short of the peak which it will reach in 1956. There are at present about 180,000 primary places under construction. Smaller annual programmes of new primary places than those of recent years should, therefore, more than suffice, with work already in hand, to keep pace with increasing numbers and new housing developments.
