HC Deb 11 February 1954 vol 523 c157W
93. Mr. Hoy

asked theMinister of Labour if he is aware of the number of unemployed painters in Edinburgh; and what steps he is taking in conjunction with the Secretary of State for Scotland and other Departments to provide work for these men.

Mr. Watkinson

Yes. There were 182 on 11th January, but after a rise during the recent cold spell, the number has fallen to 142 on 9th February. All Departments concerned have done their best to get more painting work done in the winter, so as to mitigate this seasonal unemployment, and there has been a substantial improvement compared with last winter.
