HC Deb 10 February 1954 vol 523 c137W
110. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General when the new telephone system at Newport will be completed; what areas it will serve; and the approximate numbers with whom it will be possible to communicate by its dial system.

Mr. Gammans

We expect to open the new exchange at Newport at the end of this year. It will serve the same area as the present Newport exchange and will enable its own 4,200 subscribers, as well as 1,300 on five other exchanges, to communicate with each other. Further equipment is to be installed to increase the dialling range and by the end of 1955 it should be possible to dial to a further 18,000 subscribers on automatic exchanges within 15 miles of Newport.
