HC Deb 10 February 1954 vol 523 cc125-6W
58. Mr. Edelman

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will state the nature of his explanation to the French Government of the circumstances in which M. Cassin was detained and questioned at Victoria Station on 22nd January.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

No. As soon as this matter was brought to my attention, I sent through the French Ambassador, an expression of my deep regret to M. Cassin, which I later repeated. My right hon. and learned Friend the Home Secretary wrote personally to M. Cassin in the same sense. I received yesterday a letter fromthe French Ambassador stating that in the circumstances his Government regarded the incident as closed.
