§ Mr. Beswickasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the nature of the proposals put forward in the past year by the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and considered by Her Majesty's Government for the control and supervision of any ban or prohibition of nuclear weapons.
§ Mr. TurtonThe proposals for the control of a prohibition on nuclear weapons based on the principle of inspection put forward by the Soviet Representative during the meetings of the Sub-Committee of the United Nations Disarmament Commission in London in May and June are set out in Command Paper 9204. These proposals did not differ in any important respect from proposals put forward by the Soviet Union in the Atomic Energy Commission in 1947 and rejected by the Commission as not providing an adequate basis for the effective international control of the elimination from national armaments of atomic weapons. The Soviet proposals were repeated in general terms by the Soviet Representative during the recent disarmament debate in the United Nations General Assembly.
