HC Deb 14 December 1954 vol 535 c111W
60. Mr. Murray

asked the Minister of Labour what estimate has been made by Her Majesty's Government of the future trend in the numbers likely to be employed in the coalmining industry in North-West Durham; and what steps are being taken to provide alternative employment in that area by the introduction of new industries.

Mr. Watkinson

The numbers employed in the coalmining industry in North-West Durham are expected to continue to decline gradually over the next few years. Despite the decline in coal-mining, the employment position in the area has improved steadily in recent years and there are good prospects that a high level of employment will be maintained. With regard to the second part of the Question, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer to a later Question he has addressed to my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade.
