Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation the amount of grant to highway authorities for road maintenance, improvement and new construction for each county of England, Scotland and Wales for the year 1953–54, together with the estimated grant to such counties for the year 1954–55.

pursuant to his written reply [OFFICIAL REPORT, 30th March; Vol. 525, col. 184] supplied the following statement:

The desired information so far as it is available is given below. Estimates of the grants to be made for major improvements and new construction to each authority cannot be given so early in the financial year. The figures for such grants relating to 1953–54 are for the total cost of the schemes, which may be spread over several years.
