55. Mr. Harrison

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Defence the lowest, the highest and the average pension, per annum, paid to the 359 officers still surviving on 20th January, 1953, which were given in 1919 and were to vary with the cost of living.

Mr. Birch

The lowest rate of retired pay received by any of the officers in question was £787 10s. 0d. a year and the highest £1,300 a year. The average was about £950 a year.

Mr. M. Stewart

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Defence how many of the retired officers of the Armed Forces receiving pensions at 9½ per cent. below the 1919 rates are receiving pensions below £300, between £300 and £400, between £400 and £500, between £500 and £600, and over £600 respectively.

Mr. Birch

All Service officers receiving retired pay stabilised at 9½ per cent. below the 1919 level are in receipt of over £600 a year.
