HC Deb 26 November 1953 vol 521 cc65-6W
42. Mr. Gooch

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that the high price at which the 100 Landrace pigs, recently imported into this country, were sold was many times in excess of the price paid to the Swedish producers; and if he will control the future selling price here and thus enable small breeders to purchase these pigs.

Mr. Nugent

My right hon. Friend is aware that the prices realised for the pigs recently imported from Sweden were high in comparison with the prices for which they were bought. He understands that the intention is that the whole of the difference, after payment of tax, will be used for some purpose of general benefit to the pig industry. My right hon. Friend has no power to control the prices of pigs sold for breeding.
