HC Deb 19 November 1953 vol 520 c180W
52. Mr. Erroll

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the grant to the Royal Society of Edinburgh has been increased to £3,500 for 1953–54 from £2,000 for 1952–53.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The grant-in-Aid to the Royal Society of Edinburgh is in two parts. A grant for general purposes, which had been at £600 since 1907 was raised to £1,000 in 1948–49, since when it has not been changed. A grant for scientific publications, previously £1,000, was increased to £2,500 this year because of greatly increased costs of printing. Without this increased grant the Royal Society would have been compelled to suspend publication of papers which represent important original contributions to science.
