HC Deb 19 November 1953 vol 520 cc190-1W
110. Mr. Ian Harvey

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why policemen in the Metropolitan area employed on duties indoors are required to wear helmets.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The Commissioner of Police informs me that Metropolitan police officers are not ordinarily required to wear helmets when they are employed on indoor duties, for example in police stations; but that the helmet, which is part of police uniform, is worn when officers are on duty in public places whether indoors or out.
