§ 93. Mr. Goochasked the Minister of Agriculture if he is aware that the September returns show that the number of workers on agricultural holdings is lower by 12,600 on this year; and what proposals are being considered, with a view to arresting this continued drift from the land.
§ Sir T. DugdaleYes. As regards the second part of the Question, the Government are encouraging the recruitment of suitable workers by the development of training schemes and other means and by their general policy to promote the well-being and stability of the industry. An186W apprenticeship scheme has recently been introduced and has been well received in the industry. Year by year rural amenities are being extended, housing shortages overtaken and existing accommodation improved. Improved techniques, higher yielding crops, and more mechanisation are steadily raising output per man. The hon. Member will be aware that agricultural production continues to increase.
