HC Deb 17 November 1953 vol 520 cc131-2W
Mr. Wheatley

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether, in the light of the Third Report of the Law Society of Scotland on the Legal Aid Scheme in Scotland, he will extend the provisions of the scheme in Scotland to include legal aid in matters not involving litigation, legal advice, and legal aid in criminal matters.

Mr. J. Stuart

Such an extension is not contemplated at present. As the right hon. and learned Gentleman is aware, however, it has been possible to make some special arrangements in regard to legal aid in criminal cases.

Mr. Wheatley

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether, in the light of the Third Report of the Law Society of Scotland on the Legal Aid Scheme in Scotland, he will introduce amending legislation to raise the standard of disposable income below which no contribution to the legal aid fund is payable.

Mr. J. Stuart

While I am watching the position very closely, amending legislation is not proposed at present.
