HC Deb 16 November 1953 vol 520 cc129-30W
Mr. Houghton

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what works are now proceeding on the Brighton Road between Hooley and Merstham; why these further excavations are necessary so soon after previous ones; and what is the total expense already incurred since 1946 on reconstruction of this road between Dean Lane, Hooley and Shepherds Hill, Merstham.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The work now proceeding consists partly of the replacement of defective portions of concrete, which is the responsibility of the contractor under the conditions of contract, and partly of the reconstruction of short additional sections which were omitted from the original contract for economy reasons, but have since shown signs of failure. The total cost of the work done since the 1st April, 1946, and of that now in progress is £43,000.
