§ Sir W. Darlingasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the grant to universities, colleges, etc., in Great Britain has been increased to£27 million for 1953–54 from£25,354,500 for 1952–53.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerThe grant is in accordance with the quinquennial settlement for the universities for 1952–57 which I announced on 21st February, 1952. It is intended to enable the universities to maintain their existing activities, with some measure of development, particularly in science and technology.
