Mr. Lewis

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if he will publish in HANSARD the average wage rate for staff employed by his Department in the House of Commons at 1946; and the percentage rise in this average rate since 1946 to the latest convenient date.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The average salary of Treasury staff who carry out their duties exclusively in the House of Commons was£348 a year in 1946. In the year ended 31st October, 1953, the average had increased by 35 per cent. This figure is calculated without reference to allowances paid in 1946 or 1953.
