§ Sir S. Marshallasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will state the rate of subsistence and other allowances made to elected members of local councils attending local government conferences and officials of municipal boroughs and urban district councils, respectively.
§ Mr. H. MacmillanThe rates for members of local authorities are determined by the particular local authority in each case, subject to prescribed maximum rates. The maximum rates of financial loss allowance are, for each 24-hour period, 10s. where the period over which earnings are lost is up to four hours, or 20s. where it is over four hours. These allowances are at present under review. Maximum rates of travelling and subsistence allowance are prescribed by the Local Government (Members' Allowances) Regulations, 1948 (S.I. 1948, No. 1784), as amended by the Local Government (Members' Allowances) Amendment Regulations, 1949 (S.I. 1949, No. 457), and the Local Government (Members' Allowances) Amendment Regulations, 1952 (S.I. 1952, No. 535). I am sending16W the hon. Member copies of these. I have no details of the rates of allowances paid to officials of municipal boroughs and urban district councils, for which I have no responsibility.
