HC Deb 26 March 1953 vol 513 c85W
11. Sir T. Moore

asked the Minister of Education at what rate the number of teachers has increased in primary and secondary schools during the past year; and to what extent the number recruited has affected the size of school classes.

Miss Horsbrugh

During 1952 the number of teachers in maintained primary and secondary schools increased by 5,000 There was during that year an abnormally large increase in the number of children at school, a larger increase than any that has occurred in recent years or is likely to occur in any future year for which calculations are possible. For this reason I estimate that when full particulars are available they will show that there has been some increase in the size of classes during 1952.
