HC Deb 26 March 1953 vol 513 cc111-2W
Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies his most recent plans to protect loyal Kikuyu in Kenya; and to provide each of them with sustenance, work and wages and a secure future.

Mr. Lyttelton

Measures taken to protect loyal Kikuyu include the disposition of considerable military and police forces, the formation of African Home Guard units and resistance groups in the Kikuyu reserves, the opening of new police posts and stations, and the concentration in guarded villages of the labour forces on some farms and in forest areas. The only loyal Kikuyu who may at present need sustenance, work and wages are some of those who have been repatriated from the settled areas to their reserves or who have moved voluntarily but have no claim to land in the reserves. Many are being absorbed by their clan as squatters, and it is hoped that the bulk of those who are not so absorbed can be offered employment on various development projects, near which they will be able to live as complete families.
