§ Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware of the urgent need for an immediate reorganisation of industry, education and employment in Kenya, pending the labours of the Royal Commission which has recently been appointed to consider the problems of that area; and if he will, accordingly, take immediate steps to meet these needs.
§ Mr. LytteltonI would refer the hon. and learned Member to the reply I gave on 25th February to the hon. Member for Gravesend (Sir R. Acland). The Government of Kenya do not intend to suspend or delay their programme of social and economic development until the Royal Commission has reported. I have had placed in the Library two pamphlets, "African Development in Kenya, 1946–1955, Land, Livestock and Water," and "Some Aspects of the Development of Kenya Government Services for the benefit of Africans from 1946 onwards," which contain a useful account of what has been and is being done.
