HC Deb 26 March 1953 vol 513 cc102-3W
75. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he will state the horse population in 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950, and at the latest known date.

Mr. Nugent

The only returns collected concern horses kept on agricultural holdings at the date of the June census. The figures are as follows:

under marginal production schemes; and how far the scope of such schemes will be widened to provide assistance towards the cost of making hard roads to outlying farms.

Mr. Nugent

The extra £1¼ million is for the whole of the United Kingdom. Of the amount apportioned to England and Wales, some will be devoted to schemes of the kinds already eligible for which there is strong demand and which particularly help small livestock fanners to grow more feedingstuffs on their own land. The rest will be available for projects hitherto ruled out as too costly, such as claying and marling of blowing land, cattle shelters and repairing farm approach roads. Making new roads is beyond the scope of the scheme.
