HC Deb 19 March 1953 vol 513 c39W
Mrs. White

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies by what method Africans are chosen to serve on the standing advisory boards which deal with labour conditions in Nyasaland; and how far these boards have power to fix minimum or other wages.

Mr. Lyttelton

African members of these boards are nominated by the Provincial Commissioners. The boards are only advisory; after considering their recommendations, the Governor-in-Council has power to fix wage rates either generally or for specified areas.
