asked the Minister of Health if he is satisfied with the working of nurses and staff councils in hospitals; and what representations have been made to him to ensure their improved effectiveness and value.

I assume the hon. Member is referring to the Joint Consultative Committees that have been set up under a Whitley Council agreement. Certain features of the model constitution have been criticised, but in general I understand that the Committees are shaping satisfactorily. Their value will, of course, continue to depend entirely on the spirit in which they are used by both management and staff.
