HC Deb 18 March 1953 vol 513 cc9-10W
74. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what strategic materials have been transported to China from or via Hong Kong during the last year.

Mr. Lyttelton

No strategic goods subject to Hong Kong export control were exported under licence to China in 1952, except for a few insignificant items specially authorised for non-strategic uses. Strict precautions are taken to ensure that strategic goods re-exported to neighbouring territories other than China are for genuine local use and are not re-exported to China.

The amount of strategic cargo passing through the Colony in transit is also estimated to be insignificant. Intensive measures are taken to prevent smuggling of strategic goods and the quantities smuggled are believed to be very small.
