HC Deb 17 March 1953 vol 512 c184W
98. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Secretary of State for War whether swimming is a compulsory part of training in the Service; and why charges for admission to swimming baths and pools for instruction are not admissible against public funds.

Mr. J. R. H. Hutchison

While all ranks of the Army are encouraged to learn to swim, swimming is at present a compulsory part of the training only at stations where War Department or free natural facilities are available. We have not the funds available to meet the total admission charges which would result from compulsory training everywhere.
