asked the Secretary of State for War on how many cases courts of inquiry were assembled between 3rd September, 1939, and 15th August, 1945, under the provision of Section 72 of the Army Act, on the ground that a soldier had been absent without leave for 21 days or more.

A comprehensive record of courts of inquiry assembled under Section 72 of the Army Act is not kept centrally, but I can say that during this period 99,319 cases of desertion were reported following such courts of inquiry.
