HC Deb 10 March 1953 vol 512 c106W
109. Major McCallum

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether a decision has now been reached about payment of the hill sheep subsidy for the current year.

Mr. J. Stuart

Yes. After full consideration of all the relevant circumstances, and consultation with the interests concerned, the Government have decided that they would not be justified in authorising payment of a subsidy in the current year. The question of the subsidy will, of course, be reconsidered next year in the light of prevailing economic circumstances of the hill sheep industry.
