HC Deb 09 March 1953 vol 512 c90W
85. Mr. P. Wells

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he will discontinue the importation of poultry from countries where fowl pest exists.

Mr. Nugent

The importation of live and dead poultry from countries where fowl pest exists is in general prohibited by Orders made under Diseases of Animals Act, 1950. There are, however, special arrangements under which poultry carcases may be imported under licence from a specified area in France and a part of the Union of South Africa which are free from fowl pest, though other parts of those countries are not. These imports are subject to stringent safeguards.
