HC Deb 05 March 1953 vol 512 c52W
48. Mr. J. T. Price

asked the Minister of Education if she is aware that the Workers Educational Association makes an important contribution to the cultural life of small communities; that this work will be undermined by the cuts in Government grant which she has announced: and if she will restore the cuts.

Miss Horsbrugh

I am aware of the valuable work which the Workers Educational Association is doing in small communities as well as in larger centres. With regard to the second and third parts of the Question, I would refer the hon. Member to my answer of 26th February to the hon. and gallant Member for Norfolk, Central (Brigadier Medlicott).

51. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Education to make a statement on her recent discussions with representatives of adult education organisations concerning the grants for 1953–1954.

53. Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Education if, in the light of representations made to her by the bodies concerned, she will now reconsider her proposed 10 per cent. cut in grants to bodies in adult education.

55. Mr. Wiley

asked the Minister of Education whether she has now received the further information about adult education she requested from the individually responsible bodies; and if she will now make a statement on the reduction of grants for adult education.

Miss Horsbrugh

I would refer the hon. Members to the answer I gave on 26th February to the hon. and gallant Member for Norfolk, Central (Brigadier Medlicott). Not all the bodies concerned have yet sent me the information which I requested, and I am therefore not yet in a position to make any further statement.
