HC Deb 24 June 1953 vol 516 c139W
53. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will now make a further statement upon the invitations to representatives of the three regions of Nigeria, to the London Conference, on the Nigerian Constitution.

54. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a further statement respecting the present political situation in Nigeria; and how far he is considering a revision of the Constitution.

Mr. Lyttelton

The leaders of the three major parties in Nigeria met the Governor on 19th June and agreed upon certain suggestions about the composition and terms of reference of the proposed conference to be held in London on the Nigerian Constitution. These have now been put to me. The suggestions are at present the subject of negotiation and the matter is not yet clinched. At this stage the House will not, I am sure, expect me to give details. With regard to the last part of the Question by the hon. Member for Leyton (Mr. Sorensen), I would refer him to the statement I made in the House on 21st May.
