HC Deb 17 June 1953 vol 516 cc57-8W
24. Sir F. Messer

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that the newspaper called "Things English," published in Sweden, claims to be a British newspaper; that it is, in fact, owned and controlled by Swedish nationals; that it carries under its title the statement, "Founded by the British Council"; and, as this statement gives the impression that the paper is controlled by the British Council, if he will take further steps to secure that the reference to the British Council is in future deleted.

Mr. Nutting

After the hon. Gentleman raised this matter in the House in June of 1951, the publishers of this periodical rejected an invitation from the British Council to remove from it the phrase "Founded by the British Council." When they bought the periodical from the British Council in 1950, the contract of sale, in fact, provided that the words "Founded by the British Council" should appear on each issue.
