HC Deb 17 June 1953 vol 516 cc69-70W
109. Mr. Erroll

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General whether he has investigated the advantages, in suitable circumstances, provided by long-distance road haulage for the rapid transmission of mail.

Mr. Gammans

It is the practice of the Post Office to consider the use of all available forms of transport for the conveyance of mail. If my hon. Friend has any particular service in mind I shall be pleased to look into the matter.

110. Mr. Erroll

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General to what extent the internal services of the British European Airways Corporation are employed in order to speed up the transmission of mail.

Mr. Gammans

About 125 million items of correspondence a year are now being carried by British European Airways on their internal services. Transmission of mail by air has greatly improved the speed of mail deliveries to some outlying parts of the United Kingdom.
