HC Deb 30 July 1953 vol 518 c200W
88. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will review the sentence of three years' imprisonment passed upon Mrs. M. McPhie on 12th June, 1952, at Durham Assizes for her first offence, in respect of which a petition of over 5,000 signatures has been sent to him.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

I have considered this case on a number of occasions, but the only conclusion I can reach is that there are no grounds on which I should be justified in recommending any interference with the sentence which the court thought it right to pass on Mrs. McPhie and with which the Court of Criminal Appeal declined to interfere.
