HC Deb 30 July 1953 vol 518 c192W
72. Sir L. Ropner

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he has yet to come to a decision about the sterilisation of imported bone meal and bones, with a view to minimising the danger of anthrax; and if he will make a statement.

Sir T. Dugdale

In the light of the discussions that have taken place with the trade and in view of the sustained fall in the number of outbreaks of anthrax since last autumn I do not feel I should be justified at present in requiring imported bone meal and bones to be sterilised against anthrax. Such a requirement might well have a disproportionate effect on supplies of essential fertilisers. I shall continue to watch the situation, and where necessary my officers will continue to advise manufacturers on the steps they can take to avoid any danger of animal feedingstuffs becoming contaminated.
