The number of diesel-engined road vehicles with licences current at any time during the quarter ended 30th September, 1952 (the latest period for which figures are available) was:

Hackney vehicles … … 57,598
Goods vehicles … … 48,613

The above excludes certain minor classes of vehicle (for example, road construction vehicles, tower wagons and fire engines), as regards which no particulars of the type of engine are available, but some of which may be diesel-engined.
