HC Deb 28 July 1953 vol 518 c130W
Mr. Viant

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many of the children, whose births were registered in each of the years 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1952, were successfully vaccinated; how many deaths from smallpox were registered in each of those years at ages 0 to 4, 5 to 24, 25 to 64, 65 years and upwards; and how many deaths from cowpox and effects of vaccination were registered during those years.

Mr. J. Stuart

Of the 469,605 children whose births were registered in these five years, 163,106 are shown in the returns of the local health authorities to have been vaccinated. The only deaths from smallpox during the period were in 1950, when there was a total of six; one in age group 0 to 4, four in age group 5 to 24, and one in age group 25 to 64. A total of five deaths from cowpox and post-vaccinal complications were registered during the period, one in 1948, two in 1950, and two in 1951.
