HC Deb 28 July 1953 vol 518 c129W
104. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how far he hopes to standardise pig breeds; and which breeds are most suitable for the north.

Mr. J. Stuart

I have no powers to standardise pig breeds. The Large White is by far the predominant breed in the North of Scotland. The Wessex takes second place.

105. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many Landrace pigs have been imported into Scotland; how far they have proved suitable for conditions in the North of Scotland; and what experiments in crossbreeding have been carried out.

Mr. J. Stuart

To date 17 Landrace pigs have been imported into Scotland from Sweden. Another five are being imported shortly. Reports show that pigs of this breed are able to thrive under the conditions in the North of Scotland. Cross-breeding, mainly with the Large White, has been carried out by a number of breeders with results which are reported to be satisfactory.
