HC Deb 27 July 1953 vol 518 cc90-1W
85. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Minister of Supply whether he will make a statement on the results of the investigations now being made by British and American experts into the possibility of lessening jet engine noise.

Mr. Sandys

Research already undertaken in this country has substantially increased our knowledge about the basic problems involved and has indicated possible ways in which the design of jet engines might be modified so as to reduce noise. However, it is still too early to say what results will be achieved in practice. The American authorities concerned are working very closely with us and they recently sent representatives to take pan in a joint conference organised by the Ministry of Supply in collaboration with Southampton University. Next month British experts are attending meetings on this subject in the United States at the invitation of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.
