HC Deb 21 July 1953 vol 518 cc14-5W
40. Mr. R. Bell

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he has any further statement to make about the use of official-paid envelopes for correspondence sent by Members of Parliament to nationalised industries.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Yes. This matter has been considered by my right hon. Friend in consultation with the Postmaster-General. In view of the fact that hon. Members have been encouraged both by this and the late Government to write direct to nationalised Industries in appropriate cases instead of to Ministers, I am glad to be able to announce that the use of official paid envelopes by hon. Members will be authorised as from today when writing either to the headquarters, or the regional, area or local offices of nationalised industries on matters arising from hon. Members' Parliamentary duties.
