HC Deb 15 July 1953 vol 517 c173W
86. Mr. Harold Davies

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware of the public concern over the deterioration of British roads; and whether he is prepared to give greater priority to the maintenance, improvement and reconstruction of our national high ways, in view of their economic and strategic importance.

Mr. Maudling

While it has not been possible in recent years to carry out road improvements on a considerable scale, I am not prepared to accept that there has been any marked deterioration in the condition of British roads as a whole. I do, however, agree that it would be desirable to devote rather more resources to the maintenance, improvement and rconstruction of our national highways as soon as this can be afforded.
