HC Deb 02 July 1953 vol 517 cc45-6W
Sir A. Bossom

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General what special steps he is taking to help farmers in isolated districts who are anxious to have a telephone installed, as the lack of one greatly hampers their work.

Mr. Gammans

While the provision of telephone service for farmers is given high priority, we are unable, because of our limited resources, to meet individual applications requiring a disproportionate amount of material and labour. For such cases we have introduced a self-help scheme, under which farmers provide and maintain part of the line themselves and in return are allowed a rebate in rental.
