HC Deb 26 January 1953 vol 510 cc72-3W
60. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of National Insurance the number of retired pensioners in Cardiff; the number in receipt of supplementary pensions; and the number in receipt of non-contributory pensions.

Mr. Turton

The number of retirement pensioners in this area is not known as it is not possible from our records to give this figure by localities. On 16th December last the two National Assistance Board offices in Cardiff were paying 7,510 regular weekly grants of National Assistance in supplementation of retirement pensions and 2,740 non-contributory old age pensions of which 1,274 were being supplemented by National Assistance.

61. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of National Insurance the number of retired pensioners in Cardiff who have sought supplementary assistance to obtain clothing, bedding, etc., during the past year; and the number of applications that have been refused.

Mr. Turton

I regret that the specific information asked for is not available, but during the 12 months to December, 1952, 2,082 pensioners or other applicants received from the Board's offices in Cardiff grants to meet exceptional needs for clothing, bedding, etc.
