HC Deb 26 February 1953 vol 511 c239W
99. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Defence if he will arrange for all members of Her Majesty's Forces who have worked on the effects of the floods to be given special leave, new clothing, etc., and other special recognition.

Mr. Birch

I appreciate the spirit which prompted the hon. Member's suggestion. The tribute which has been paid by the House and elsewhere to the magnificent work done by members of Her Majesty's Forces has already been conveyed to them. It is customary for the Forces to give assistance in time of national emergency, and I do not think that they would expect, or even desire, special recognition. Wear and tear of clothing arising from this work will be made good without cost to the men concerned. Unit and formation commanders are well aware of the extra work and loss of leave caused by these special duties and are taking all possible steps to make it good.
