Many of the teams manning the rest and reception centres consist of members of the welfare section of the Corps who are also members of the W.V.S. and other voluntary aid societies; as also are those of the personnel operating the food flying squads and helping in emergency feeding generally. Fire brigades in the affected areas have rendered valuable assistance and reinforcements to these areas have been made from regular brigades in other parts of the country. Outside the affected areas, about 1,600 regular firemen are standing by with pumps and equipment ready to move in to render any necessary assistance.
