HC Deb 12 February 1953 vol 511 cc59-60W
76. Mr. Elwyn Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements exist to provide adequate warning to those whose homes may be imperilled in the event of floods; whether he is satisfied that those arrangements operated satisfactorily during the recent flooding; and whether he will now review these arrangements in the light of recent experience.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

As I have already indicated in the statements I have made to the House, there has been no general warning system in operation in the past, except in the Thames Estuary Wales, but not used for afforestation, is 67,000 acres. Of this total 20,000 acres will be left in agriculture, 9,000 acres are unplantable, and 38,000 acres are awaiting planting.
