HC Deb 12 February 1953 vol 511 c55W
68. Mr. Llewellyn

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many acres of common land there are in Wales and Glamorgan, respectively; whether he is satisfied with their condition; and what steps he proposes to take in cases where the standard of husbandry does not excel that of a Grade C farmer.

Sir T. Dugdale

There are no reliable statistics of the acreage of common land. The area in Wales is probably about 500,000 acres, and in Glamorgan about 50,000 acres. I cannot say that I am satisfied with their condition, but commons cannot usually be cultivated or fenced, so the rules of good husbandry do not apply.
