HC Deb 11 February 1953 vol 511 cc37-8W
71. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many of the villagers of Permatang Tinggi, Malaya, were sent to detention camps in August last; how many of them have been set free; and what were the terms of the declaration which they were asked to sign before they were released.

Mr. Lyttelton

Sixty-two villagers were detained in August, 1952; 37 have been set free in Malaya: they were not required to sign any declaration before release. Twenty-one were deported to China and four relatives voluntarily accompanied them.
