HC Deb 05 February 1953 vol 510 cc228-9W
77. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Labour how many young persons who left schools in Sunderland at Christmas are now unemployed.

Mr. Watkinson

I regret that the precise information asked for is not available. Of the young people registered as unemployed at 12th January, 1953, however, probably the majority of those under 16 years of age, numbering 239, had left school at Christmas.

Mr. Hamilton

asked the Minister of Labour how many girls under 18 years of age were unemployed in the employment exchange areas of Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath, Lochgelly, Leven, Kirkcaldy, and Leslie on the latest date for which figures are available; what percentage this represents of the total registered as unemployed; and what is the corresponding percentage for Scotland as a whole.

Mr. Watkinson

Eighty-five at 12th January. This figure represented 4.6 per cent. of the total number of unemployed persons on the registers of the same employment exchanges at that date. The corresponding percentage for Scotland was 3.3.

Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Labour how many young persons were unemployed in Sunderland at the latest available date; and how many such persons were unemployed at the corresponding date last year.

Mr. Watkinson

The total number of young persons under 18 years of age registered as unemployed at employment exchanges and youth employment offices in Sunderland at 12th January, 1953, was 349.
