HC Deb 05 February 1953 vol 510 c237W
Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Education the total number of boys who at the last convenient date left grammar schools on reaching the age of 16 years without taking the general examination certificate; and how this number compares with the previous year.

Miss Horsbrugh

Precise information is not available. The numbers of boys aged 15 and 16 leaving grant-aided grammar schools during the educational year ending 31st July, 1951, were 8,929 and 23.255. The corresponding figures for 1950 were 10,834 and 22,316. Nearly all those who left when they were aged 15 would have left without taking the examination for the General Certificate of Education, but the great majority of those who left at a higher age would have taken the examination in selected subjects.
